Location – Shade Sail in Geelong
The location of your shade sail needs to be determined before you make your purchase. Some things to consider are the strength of the structures you’re intending to anchor to, whether you can/need to add additional anchor points by adding posts, and the location of the area you’re hoping to shade such as a play area, swing or barbecue. Finally you’ll need to consider the direction of the sun in the hottest parts of the day.
External walls around the house and garage can be handy spots to anchor to, as can pergolas and car ports and even large established trees. The main thing is that each point is structurally sound. A builder or engineer can advise if you’re unsure. Remember safety is key and shade sail anchor points are taking the load from the wind and elements.
Building Permits – Shade Sail in Geelong
It’s worth checking with Geelong City Council, Surf Coast Shire or Golden Plains Shire to see what their specific rules are on shade sails in Geelong and the greater region.

Installation – Shade Sail in Geelong
Once you’ve got everything and all fixing points are ready it’s time to install all fixing hardware in the desired location ensuring everything is secured tightly.
Lay the shade sail out on the ground and connect each corner to the fixing points one by one.
Once the sail is up you’ll need to tension it until it’s firm and taut. A ratchet tensioning tool my help you do this.
Be careful not to over tension and check the sail regularly as it may require re-tensioning from time to time.
